• » Culture and History
  • Over the course of its history Atlantic city has owned several nicknames that have helped make this city a popular east coast destination for gambling, so it's no wonder why the town has been referred to as Little Vegas, City by the Sea, the Queen of Resorts, the Seaside Vegas, and Casino City. The famous boardwalk was built in 1870 to keep visitors from tracking sand into the local businesses. Now, it is a historic landmark full of shops and activities. The old Absecon Lighthouse is another city treasure that was built in 1870. This particular lighthouse, New Jersey's tallest lighthouse, is now a museum. A visit to Absecon Lighthouse is the perfect pre-lunch expedition or post-shopping shot of culture, as it is located just minutes away from the boardwalk. The Civil Rights Garden is a beautiful oasis of plants, trees and flowers honoring the journey of African Americans toward full rights under the United States Constitution. It is adjacent to the Carnegie library which was built in 1904 and is part of the beginnings of the city. The Atlantic City Historical Museum is a place where you can learn about the origins of the first Ms. America Pageant plus take a look at the Al Gold Photography Gallery where you’ll take a closer look at the city’s history. To this day you can still get a free pickle just like the ones condiment mogul MR Heinz used to give out on the Heinz pier for close to 50 years!

  • » Shopping and dining at the Boardwalk
  • As mentioned before, The famous Atlantic City Boardwalk was built in 1870 mainly to keep the sand from being dragged in from the shore by the patrons of the hotels that existed then. Today the boardwalk is home to a wide assortment of businesses, including specialty stores and shopping malls. The Atlantic City Outlets is home to many leading chain stores like banana republic, casual corner, the Gap etc, as well as places to dine. Another beautiful complex on the boardwalk is Siganos plaza. It houses a variety of eateries serving everyone's favorites like pizza and Chinese food as well as Philly cheese steaks and even Hershey's ice cream shop. The Opa Bar and Grille offers a delicious blend of American and Mediterranean cuisine in an elegant, but relaxed seaside venue. The Quarter is a shopping center located inside of the Tropicana hotel/casino that blends the style of old Havana with the comforts of modern America.
