In the 1870's, the Atlantic City Boardwalk revolutionized the concept of beach communities across America. Initially, the Boardwalk was built to provide an easier walk from the beach to the city. A long stroll across dry sand can be exhausting.
It wasn't until the early 1900's when a series of rides, games, shops, eateries and resorts graced the oceanfront. The idea paved the way for Atlantic City as a tourist haven. At the time commercial flight didn't even exist, so the primary mode of transportation was by car. Rapidly, the appeal became so widespread among all travelers throughout the Northeast, and along the coast, that Atlantic City came to be known as "the Queen of Resorts."
Nowadays, casinos are by far the biggest allure, yet there are plenty of family attractions and activities to enjoy aside from gambling. Along the Boardwalk, carnival games, souvenir shops, food carts, rides and original salt water taffy create the classic feel of long ago that can't be matched elsewhere.
